Reflecting on Roe v. Wade

To understand how to move forward in the fight for reproductive justice, we need to be able to clearly understand our past. More specifically, to understand the background of our opposition: so what is the history of the anti-abortion movement in the United States?

Tune in to this in-depth presentation with Michigan Voices’ Reproductive Justice Coordinator, Aaliyah Abdul-Mutakallim.

It is challenging to reflect on the Roe v. Wade decision today when we are so far away from it. The 7-2 decision was made over 50 years ago on January 22, 1973. It isn’t often that fifty years of time passing leads to such a significant regression in policy, and it’s appalling that women today have fewer reproductive rights than their mothers, but here we are.

This movement goes beyond choice, and it doesn’t start or end with abortion access. The path forward is certain to be tumultuous, but it’s one we must walk together. Now more than ever, we need to stand up for reproductive justice and collective liberation.
