Michigan Voices: Hiring Democracy Coordinator

Position Overview:


The Democracy Coordinator will work with the Democracy Workgroup to coordinate efforts with table partners to ensure secure and accessible elections, and to support partners with work on election protection, new district education and voter rights & registration.


Michigan Voices works with a broad coalition of organizations and individuals, as well as county and city officials to expand opportunities for civic engagement and build support for secure and modern elections.


This position will report directly to the Democracy Workgroup Manager and will work closely with other program departments at Michigan Voices.


Primary Functions:


  • Supporting our virtual coalition meetings, being an active participant, and tracking follow ups as needed

  • Assisting in creating agenda & content for bi-weekly workgroup meetings

  • Assisting in facilitation of Democracy workgroup meetings

  • Tracking current events, including legislative updates, and their impact on our table, especially our Democracy workgroup partners

  • Assisting in training and providing resources and support to our partner organization statewide

  • Potential of attending partner events (virtual & in-person) to learn more about them, opportunity to support them, take notes, take photos, & report back to MV team

  • Engage community partners on issues such as voting rights, voter education, new district education, election protection and democracy reform across the state of Michigan.

  • Support manager with partner organization outreach

  • Assist manager in field, communications, policy, and strategic assistance to partners to plan, grow and sustain democracy work in the State of Michigan

  • Assist in coordinating the distribution of information and materials that help partners fight voter suppression efforts

  • Assist in tracking grant deliverables, events, other measurable success of our partners for reporting purposes

  • Attend other coalition & MV department meetings to promote MV Democracy workgroup goals, and bring back relative information to the Democracy workgroup.

  • Assist manager with cross-departmental tasks that involve our Communications, Integrated Voter Engagement and Partnership departments on projects, for streamlining and effectiveness


Qualifications:


  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills

  • Experience working with BIPOC & historically marginalized communities; understanding how to navigate ones presence based on dynamic of partners & communities

  • 2+ years of grassroots organizing in Michigan

  • Experience with voting rights and election protection organizing

  • Some experience with VAN (Voter Action Network)

  • Use of Social media as an organizing tool

  • Existing relationship(s) with community organizations across Michigan

  • Attention to detail and tracking

  • Self-motivated in a work-from-home or hybrid office model

  • Ability to enthusiastically communicate via Zoom for meetings & trainings

  • Understanding of how power, privilege, and oppression manifest at the individual, interpersonal, institutional, and cultural levels. Personal commitment to learning and growth, especially around equity.

  • Passion for social justice and democracy reform

  • Be able to clearly communicate broad vision, goals, and steps to achieving those goals.


Preferred Experience:


  • Experience organizing around civic engagement & voter rights

  • Event and meeting planning

  • Experience with basic graphic creation (Canva)

  • Experience with creating short videos & video editing

  • Experience with social media posting (FB, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok)

  • Experience with creating trackers

  • Bonus: Multilingual

Compensation:


This is a full-time, salaried position. The salary range for this position is $45,000 - $55,000


Michigan Voices offers a full medical, dental, vision, 401k, short & long-term disability, and life insurance compensation package. We also offer a reasonable time off policy with paid vacation, sick time, and parental leave.
