Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation Community Organizer

Position would support the policy, advocacy, and outreach initiatives identified by DHDC, partner organizations, Latino leadership, and community residents to strengthen the Latino community’s voice and the capacity for its leadership to mobilize its constituency in order to increase their participation in democratic processes.

• Deep respect for Latino culture

• Strong and effective communication skills

• Strong interpersonal and relational skills

• Capacity to think strategically and analytically about social, economic, cultural, and political

issues affecting a community

• Desire to learn and openness to challenge yourself and others

• Ability to work as a team and as an individual

• Strong writing skills

• Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) is required

• Organizing experience highly desirable

• Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent experience

• Ability to speak and read Spanish required


Responsibilities


1. Assist in creating a strategic community organizing plan for Detroit Latino Community; link the Detroit Latino to the national and regional Latino agendas

2. Engage community members in issue-based mobilization and power-building efforts

3. Identify and take action on Detroit Latino Community’s key issues

4. Assist in creating a pipeline for emerging leaders

5. Providing and/or scheduling regular organizing training and presentations for the Detroit Latino Community

6. Develop active Latino volunteer community leaders through training and mentoring

7. Ensuring appropriate documentation of program activities under their supervision;

8. Monthly report writing;

9. Ensure that all program components are implemented effectively;

10. Attend related meetings and training

11. Perform all other related duties as assigned.
